Despite the fact that it's now Sunday - my bad - here is this week's installment of Weapon Wednesdays. We'll call this the Sunday edition. This week I'm looking at the M4 Carbine, an assault rifle featured in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
In Metal Gear Solid 2, the M4 Carbine is used by the SEALs, Raiden, and Solid Snake under the guise of Iroquois Pliskin. Later in the game the weapon is used by the Gurlukovich Mercenaries.
The M4 Carbine can be traced all the way back to the well-known M16 assault rifle. In fact, the M4 is a shorter and lighter version of the M16A2 assault rifle. The rifle is produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company, who has an exclusive contract to produce them until 2009. The rifle was first developed in 1994, making it less than 15 years old. It weighs 5.9 lbs when empty and 6.9 lbs with 30 rounds. It's 33 inches long with the stock extended, 29.8 inches with it retracted, and sports a 14.5 inch barrel.
The M4 is more convenient than a standard full-length rifle due to its compact size. This makes the weapon ideal for non-infantry troops such as officers and crew members, but it's also invaluable for close quarters combat. It's the preferred weapon of the U.S. Army Special Forces and Navy SEALs and has also been adopted by the United States Special Operations Command, better known as SOCOM to us gamers.
United States Marine Corps officers have recently been ordered to carry M4A1 carbines instead of M9 handguns as handguns are largely useless in modern warfare. The difference between the M4 and the M4A1 is a small one. The M4 offers three firing modes: safe, semi-auto, and 3-round burst. The M4A1 offers safe, semi-auto, and full auto.
In the U.S., M4 Carbines are currently restricted to military and civilian law enforcement. For some reason our readers always want to know where they can get the weapons featured in Weapon Wednesdays. That scares me.
