Producer of Metal Gear Solid 4 Says Japan is No Longer the Center of the Gaming World

Ryan Payton and Brian Crecente

Ryan Payton, the former producer of the Metal Gear Solid series, sat down with Kotaku's Brian Crecente to discuss gaming, among other things.

Payton claims that while Japan still rakes in most of the dough from the gaming industry, game development in general seems to be shifting to the States.

"The Japanese public seems to be disinterested in next-gen and high definition gaming. There is a stigma still attached to western technology there. There have been a lot of good mainstream games built for the Japanese Xbox 360. But they only sold a small number of copies. I think that kind of drained a lot of expectations."

Payton is still undecided about his future.
