Kojima Disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4

Apr. 19 12:53 AM by Dylan Duarte

In an interview with UK's Edge Magazine, Hideo Kojima claimed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots didn't exactly meet his vision and he was a little let down. Hit the jump to check out the quote.

Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.

When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.

I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

Despite Kojima's rather humble statement, I think that he did create something revolutionary. I can understand being disappointed when you don't have access to the resources you'd like, but I think he did a rather damn good job with what he had.

Wait, I am missing something, at the end of the statement was he trying to say the PS3 wasn't as powerful as he thought it was?

Pretty much, yeah.

yah that does suck but MGS is 1 of the most epic and gr8test series I've evr played...MGS4 got me so excited I decided 2 get better w/ S,Snake in SSBB...

i donno i think maybe kojima is just being to hard on himself he does that alot but i really doubt he is pushing the cell to its full power already i just dont see that bein possible right now i think what he is saying is he is pushing it to the max that he can right now in the time frame that they have. i think his biggest prob with why the game doesnt look as good as he thought was the fact he maxed out a 50gb bluray if he had access to a 100gb or higher capacity bluray disc i'm sure the game would have turned out the way he saw it in his head

I agree that he's being too hard on himself, but the perfectionist inside of him is the reason that MGS is such an awesome series.

I agree with you 100% i always say in hideo i trust lol this game easily looks better than anything i've seen yet it's amazing. but i think once he has more time with ps3 he'll deff find a way to squeeze even more outta it lol i remember when he did mgs 2 and he was like it can't get any better i'm usin it to the max than he put 3 out and was like i was wrong i found a way to squeeze even more outta it lol. he's a great game director i wish he would continue to make metal gear games but i'm also excited to see his new ps3 exclusive series as well.
