Weapon Wednesdays - The FN P90

Jun. 4 3:44 PM by Dylan Duarte

That's "FN" as in Fabrique Nationale, not "f'in!" Although it is a pretty cool gun and I am fairly excited.

We're getting into the weapons that played less significant parts in the series now (they can't all be the SOCOM), but they're still plenty interesting. Hit the jump to read about the P90.

The FN P90 was used by Solidus Snake when he executed Olga Gurlukovich and a few other times. It's also used by Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Along with its appearance in the Metal Gear Solid series, the P90 has also been featured in numerous other video games, most notably Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The FN P90 was designed in the mid-eighties in Belgium by a man named Stephane Ferrard, who worked for weapons manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. The name of the gun is an abbreviation of the project (as I stated above) and the number 90 signifies that it is a weapon system of the 1990s. Today the submachine gun is used by almost 30 countries, including the United States, where it is used by the US Secret Service, as well as numerous law enforcement agencies.

The P90 is a bullpup firearm like the FAMAS, which means that the action and the magazine is located behind the trigger.

The P90 is full ambidextrous, which allows it to be used by both right and left handed shooters. The charging handle, auxiliary fixed sights, and magazine release are symmetrically distributed on both sides of the weapon and the manual fire selector that is located below the trigger can be toggled from either side. Spent cartridge casings are ejected downward so as to not interfere with the shooter's line of sight.

The FN P90 is considered a Personal Defense Weapon because it's compact and effective.

I've always found them to be rather ugly guns. Of course I find most of the bullpup guns to be ugly.

I believe that this is the gun that Rare copied when they made the dreaded RCP90 (hence the P90 in the name) for Goldeneye on the N64. You gotta love dual wielding two RCP90's in GE deathmatch against you friends. Ah good times.

Next week you should do the Mosin Nagant. You know the gun that The End uses in MGS3, and that was the Russian service rifle in WWII. It's one of my favorite old bolt action rifles to fire.

They're cheap to buy, and the ammo is pretty cheap as well. Plus, those things make a loud boom, and have a huge flame shoot out of them as their muzzle flash.

Granted, The End's Nagant (model 91/30) has been modified to shoot tranquilizer darts, and has a pistol grip, but the Nagant itself it a fun gun to shoot.
