Is this for real?
With Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots only 2 days away, Metal Gear mania has struck the gaming world and rumors have started flying. Hit the jump to read about the possibly upcoming Metal Gear 3: Revolver Ocelot.
According to a forum user on the official Playstation blog, a well-known Russian site (which is down at the moment), Konami is working on a new PSP game titled Metal Gear 3: Revolver Ocelot, which it will debut at this year's E3. The image above is apparently a shot of the title screen.
The game supposedly takes place between Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and allow you to control Revolver Ocelot, one the main villains of the series. Big Boss will not be playable, but will make appearances in cutscenes, supervising the construction of Outer Heaven.
In early 2007, IGN conducted an interview with Kojima Productions Assistant Producer Ryan Patton about Portable Ops. When asked about the possibility of a sequel, Patton replied:
Absolutely. If the response to MPO is as good as we're expecting, you can look forward to new chapters in the Big Boss legacy on PSP. We still have many stories to tell about the early years of Metal Gear Solid -- I hope we can continue to do that on PSP.
Regardless of the fact that you'll be playing as Ocelot, given the time period the game takes place in and the construction of Outer Heaven, I think this definitely qualifies as another chapter in the Big Boss legacy.
In September of 2007, IGN reported that Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops 2 was being developed. However, Payton later on denied these claims.
So after all of that, I don't know what to think. This definitely seems plausible. Payton denying that Portable Ops 2 was being made could have been nothing more than a little twist on the truth, the truth being that the project had changed to Metal Gear 3: Revolver Ocelot.
What do you guys think?
UPDATE: After compiling all of this info, a friend linked me to this post on the NeoGAF forums regarding the game, posted by none other than Ryan Payton himself:
"Sounds cool. Wish we made it."
The upside? I don't have to buy a PSP.
