Weapon Wednesdays - The Mosin-Nagant

Jun. 11 2:11 PM by Dylan Duarte

The Mosin-Nagant is a bolt-action Russian military rifle that appears in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as The End's weapon of choice. If you defeat The End without killing him, you can collect it and add it to Snake's arsenal. Hit the jump to learn all about the Mosin-Nagant.

Unlike the actual rifle, The End's variant has been modified to shoot tranquilizer darts. It also uses a pistol grip, just like the Finnish variant.

The Mosin-Nagant was designed in 1891 by Captain Sergei Mosin and Leon Nagant. The demand for it came from the Russo-Turkish war, where the Russians, armed with single-shot rifles, were being slaughtered by the repeating rifles that the Turks were using. In 1882, the Russian Main Artillery Administration attempted to convert the Berdan single-shot rifle into a magazine-fed, multi-round variant. After failing to do so, they formed a special commission for the purpose of testing magazine-fed rifles.

In 1889, Captain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin submitted his 3-line calibre rifle. At the same time, a Belgian man named Leon Nagant submittied his 3.5-line design. When the trials concluded, the commission voted 14 to 10 for Nagant's design. However, higher-ranking officers pushed for Mosin's design, until finally a compromise was reach. Mosin's rifle was used with Nagant's feed mechanism. Thus was born the Mosin-Nagant Model 1891.

At the start of World War I, Russia was dealing with a shortage of arms. Because of this, they ordered 1.5 million rifles from Remington Arms and 1.8 million from New England Westinghouse, both located in the United States. During the war, many rifles were captured by German and Austro-Hungarian soliders, resulting in the rifle being used by both sides of the conflict.

The Mosin-Nagant was adapted as a sniper rifle in 1932. By the time Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, the Mosin-Nagant was the standard issue soviet weapon. Even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the rifle is still widely used around the world. It's being used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in the ongoing war in Chechnya.

Yeah, that was a pretty hardcore weapon. Namely because it was the reason The End's fight was such an arduous one.

I've got a 91/30 model of the Nagant and the M44 Carbine model made in 1944.

The Russians made a shorter version of the rifle for urban combat.

The Nagant shoots the 7.62X54 round. Not to be confused with the 7.64X39 that the AK47 shoots.

Overall, the Nagant is one of my favorite guns to shoot. The gun itself only costs about $150, and the ammo is cheap, so you can go to the range and shoot for hours and not have to worry about the cost as much.

Oops I said the AK shoots a 7.64X39, when I meant 7.62X39

The Nagant is also the cheapest WWII rifle you'll find. The M1 Garand will run you around $1000, and the other rifles from that era aren't that much cheaper either.

The Tokarev SVT-40 shoots the same round as the Nagant, but it'll run you around $500. The SVT-40 is a magazine semi automatic rifle from WWII.

Most of the German guns are pretty expensive though, because they're a collectors item.
